Intrepid XL+ is a rocket made by Rocket Crafters Inc.. I never heard of this rocket before, or the company for that matter. So, how come I decided to make this paper model? Long story short, someone asked me if I can do various rocket models. So, as a starter, I picked the simplest rocket from the lot, which is this one.
A few words about Rocket Crafters Inc. or RCI and Intrepid XL+ rocket. RCI is a Florida-based company. They develop and manufacture rocket and aerospace vehicles. They also provide space launch services. Intrepid is currently the main product and service line of RCI. Apparently, there are 3 types of launcher in Intrepid launcher family: Intrepid-1, Intrepid XL, and Intrepid XL+. (I chose to make the last because it is the biggest and it has two of those side booster thingy.)
During designing and test-building this Intrepid XL+ rocket, I learned a thing or two about paper modeling. The person who made the request gave me links to a site focusing on rocket paper models. Seeing the models at that site, I realized that rocket models, what seemed to be “just tubes and cones,” may not be as simple as it seemed. There are various techniques applied by the designers especially in keeping the cylindrical shape, which is kinda key in making such paper models. Unsurprisingly, I tried to mimic those technique in this model.
