Gatotkaca Minion Paper Model

Well, well. It seems like the “minion fever” finally catches me. The cute-looking-funny-sounding-often-silly yellow creatures have gained huge popularity since the release of Despicable Me film. I’ve seen many minion fan arts, including some paper crafts/paper models, where the makers turn minions into various famous characters like Star Wars characters or Marvel superheroes. For my project, I try to blend the minion with my local Javanese culture. And, the result is a Gatotkaca Minion paper model.

Actually, the character is Indian in origin and the name is spelled Ghatotkacha. However, since the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata has been adapted into and grown a deep root in Javanese culture, he is also a very famous character among Javanese people, or Indonesians for that matter.

Gatotkaca was the son of Bima (Bhima) of the Pandawa (Pandava). He was one of the strongest warriors in Mahabharata. What made him really stand out among other warriors was his ability to fly. In the Javanese version, he is known to have “otot kawat balung wesi” (muscles made of wires and bones made of steel) so no human weapon could injure him. Having such strengths, no wonders Indonesians often compared Gatotkaca to Superman.

This Gatotkaca Minion paper craft is kind of monumental for me because this is my first ever 3D model that I build from scratch. This projects turned out to be exciting project since this paper model is a fun spin-off combining a product of modern pop culture (Minion) with a traditional one (Javanese style Gatotkaca).

In my opinion, this particular papercraft is not too difficult to build. However, since it is relatively small—for some people, including me—some extra care might be needed in building it. I have tried to make the instruction as clear as possible. I hope it’s helpful enough.
